Looking at Kagura & Gintoki’s Complicated Relationship in Gintama – All the anime
Their relationship. What drawn me to them was their pet names for each other, honestly. Okita refers to Kagura as either "China Girl" or "China" while Kagura. Kagura, is maybe little but I can imagine her older, and with Gintoki. Maybe their relationship for now is like friends or brother/sister but many. Okita Sougo (沖田 総悟, Okita Sōgo) is the 1st Division Captain of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata, Sougo, Otae, Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura on a stakeout to catch a Sougo's sister, Mitsuba, visited Edo in preparation of her marriage. .. You trust everyone without question, even itou, but it's because of you that we got.
Hijikata even mentions how absurd it is for them to finally agree with each other now out of all times to do so. There's also this moment where Okita stabs Hijikata in his butt and tells him that he should watch his back, but then Kagura takes a stick and stabs Okita in his butt while telling him that he should play dead, and he infact does.
Remember, his legs are apart. Kagura beats up Okita for no reason while he's frozen, Gintoki does the same, but to Hijikata. Okita probably got lost in the moment and forgot that was Kagura but I'm pretty sure he knew.
What more can I say, these moments are starting to get out of hand. Okita cracks out a proposal to Kagura and of course she's shocked by it but then he ends it off with words that breaks a fangirls heart. Later in the episode, Kagura jumps on Okitas shoulders and bites his head He pulls her off with one hand shortly after she hit her head He also watches her from afar when she's hugging Asaemon!! Kagura has a summer cold but makes it seem like she's dying as an attempt to get everyone's attention, which goes according to plan.
Though, at the end of episodeOkita shows up in a way that screams shoujo anime and the episode just ENDS with Kagura reacting to that. At the beginning of episodeOkita reassures everyone but it seems more as if he's reassuring himself stating, "She ain't gonna die until me and her settle things for good. But somehow, Okita finds out that Kagura was faking it and plans her funeral.
At the end of the arc, Okita and Soyo are shown to be standing far away from everyone else, watching on a hill stating how glad they are that she's okay. They have switched colours!!
Now Kagura has a blue aura while Okita has a red one. Anyway, they charge at one other, destroying the bridge they were on. As we reach the second episode of the Soul Switch Arc we discover that.
Kagura is in Elizabeth's body Elizabeth is in Okita's body Okita is in Katsura's body and Katsura is in Kagura's body Sorachi-sensei is completely aware of this ship.
Y'all know how close Katsura and Elizabeth are. Top notch bromance, well this comes into play. What's funny is that Kaguras is freaking out over them touching each other while Okita just doesn't care. Okita in Katsura's body refers to Kagura in Elizabeth's body as Elizaretch, Spewzabeth, and Bakagura-chan He kept the chan He never uses that to address her nomatterwhat Kagura in Elizabeth's body refers to Okita in Katsura's body as Trashura and Scumtsura Okita kept the Katsura gag going though.
The man misses his boo Okita fights Kamui Okita leaves 2 critical injuries but he's got a lot of injuries himself When it came time for Kagura to fight Kamui, she noticed the 2 injuries and aimed at those.
Kamui commends her for aiming at an enemy's weakness, but then he realizes that the two of them must know each other as she doesn't point out one wound, but two. Because the Shogun was successfully assassinated and a new Shogun was appointed, the Shinsengumi disbanded and Kondo and Matsudaira were arrested and sentenced to death. Katsura got arrested as well but that was for saving Gintoki from getting arrested.
Okita lost hope and was on the verge of becoming a manslayer, but before he could do anything he could possibly regret, Kagura stopped him. She basically tracked him down because I don't think it's possible to end up in an alleyway at NIGHT while walking your dog. Kagura always walks Sadaharu in the daytime. Either way, she ran into him when he got surrounded by Joui members in that same alley.
You'd expect them to fight but nope, Kagura goes to Okita and talks some sense into him, reminding him of who he is and what the Shinsengumi are and he listened. I liked the part where Okita made sure that the Joui heard what Kagura said and charged at them, with Kagura joining him only to stop simultaneously. Sometime later a plan later arose that the Shinsengumi and Joui were going to join forces to rescue their leaders.
Kagura was the one to share the news to Hijikata since she had been there with Okita when the rest of the Shinsengumi members met up to discuss their plan of action.
At the island where Kondo, Matsudaira, and Katsura were at, Okita gets worried about the idea of Kagura climbing the cliff to let down a rope for everyone. Doesn't want his waifu to get hurt: He immediately regrets it when she manages to tie the rope against him and throw him up.
Later on, when everyone was on the cliff, the enemy began shooting arrows down and one of them hit the rock that Kagura was holding onto. Okita saves his waifus laifus Okita risks his life to part away from the cliff, to reach out for Kagura and catches her. As the attackers add another arrow, awaiting the next wave, Kagura tells him to let go of her which he doesn't do. Here, Kagura is telling him to let go because if they stay like that and more arrows were to shoot their way, Okita would fall too.
She doesn't want him getting hurt just to save her. See this, this is another example of them caring about each other. Luckily, some of the Shinsengumi manage to get up to the top of the roof and prevent anymore arrows from getting shot down.
Okita throws Kagura up and she ended up hitting her head against the edge of the cliff before knocking out some of the enemy's at the top. When Nobume and Okita were fighting, Kagura stopped them and told them that they needed to be fighting together than against. Okita tries to clarify and tell Kagura that it's Nobume and the rest of the Mimawarigumi's fault why this fight began in the first place, but Kagura tries to convince Okita that Nobume is a good person.
Though, to both their surprises, Nobume rests her sword against the side of Kaguras neck. Okita got triggered so bad damn He thought her life was in danger so he was ready to attack Nobume if she got any closer than she already was. In this scene, you can see how agitated Okita suddenly got when Kagura dares Nobume to do it. Usually, he's on top of his game and he hardly reacts to things. But here, you can see the sweat drop, the way he adjusts his stance, his pupils getting smaller, and how the light in his eye began to shake.
He doesn't want anything to happen to her. But to their surprises Nobume protects Kagura and pushes her toward Okita. The two also helped Gintoki fight Utsuro. Kagura stops the sword from slicing Gintokis neck while he was dazed and Okita jumps on Utsuro's arm despite being hit in the stomach. The two help get Nobume on her feet as they retreat to the ships. Back in Edo, it was ordered that all police officers were to be caught and killed so the rest of the Shinsengumi had to flee.
Before they left, everyone went to go say goodbye one last time Kondo went to Shinpachi and Otae. Hijikata went to Gintoki or more like Gintoki came to him. And Okita went to Kagura. Okita was being kinda out of character as he just wanted to say bye and leave but Kagura wasn't having it lol.
She reminds him of who they are and that they don't need farewells In addition, she kicks him off the bridge and Okita yells at her saying he's still healing. Here you can definitely tell that he came to her just to say goodbye and nothing more. There's also this running theory that I'm pretty sure is true about Kaguras relationship with the bridge.
It's been shown throughout the show how whenever Kagura is upset about something, she runs to the bridge and looks down at the water as a way of reassuring herself. Episodes like the Valentine's day one where she threw the chocolate in there, was an example of her hoping that the things getting washed away in the stream would also get rid of the difficult feelings she's going through. With this, her kicking Okita down there could also show the difficult emotions she's feeling at that moment.
Her rival is leaving for how long. Her friend is leaving for how long. That can be pretty difficult. After telling him off, she joins him in the water. And then they start fighting in the water. Whilst doing this, they promise each other to get stronger, and that they shouldn't lose to anyone else.
They basically said to stay safe. If you've read up to here, and still don't think they don't care about eachother you're on something.
They banter right after meeting each other. Okita agrees with Kagura against Hijikata but his facial expression makes it seem as if he's annoyed by that.
Chapter Okita tries to grab her attention by offending her but when she ignores him and leaves him. He calls out to her. Okita once again meets Kamui but Kagura is there too. Okita and Kamui indirectly argue with each other while Kagura tries to get them to stop. Out of nowhere, Okita decides to get to the "point" of the argument and yells out that Kagura is ugly Seriously though Out of all things to say He just Okay.
Kagura had nothing to do with the conversation and he just tries so hard to grab her attention and he does. Honestly Okita reminds me of a grade schooler bullying the girl they have a crush on And when I think about Kamui and add him to the equation it makes me think of one of those "boyfriend meets the brother" situations. Well if the world's gonna end atleast they'll die while they're close to each other!!
Not Kagura, but her apparent daughter, Kanna. They start fighting instantly Like mother like daughter am I right? They do some gags together. And as they fight, Shinpachi somehow gets in it and they end up beating up Shinpachi together. Honestly, he needs a break. Like he allows it to happen but still. He puts up with too much of this emotional and physical torture.
Okita interacts with Kanna like he's some lovesick dad reminiscing to his daughter about her mother Crazy comparison, I know but seriously When you read what he says, you can tell from an outside perspective that him and the person he's talking about must've been close. Okita talks to Kanna as if he knows Kagura well, he knows how she feels about certain things and predicts what she'll do next.
He had the chopsticks in his hand, but suddenly he had lost his appetite. He had known that this could happen. He had said it himself: It was for the best. Was China really leaving? Okita forced his voice to stay calm.
The thought kept banging inside his head. I knew it could go like this, Okita told himself. I knew it and I can take it. Okita pressed his knuckles against his thigh. His fist was slowly turning white, but the pain in his thigh was what he needed. The soup was getting cold. What was there anymore for him to do?
If Kagura had decided to go, she had decided to go. He had absolutely no right to try to change anything. He had done enough harm already. China… In front of his eyes, Okita saw the young girl who had decided to abandon her Yato instincts.

She had always been something he wanted to protect. Not if she went down the path she was going to take. She would be soon incredibly strong, just like her brother.

To protect… Kagura would be stronger than him in no time and the thought that he still could somehow protect her was absurd. Sorry, gramps, for letting it cool down. Okita put down his chopsticks and stood up. He had to do something.
The old Kabukicho TV tower casted a long shadow in the light of the soon-to-be-setting sun. Okita tried to see to the top, but it was impossible for him to distinguish anything from that far.
He found his way in to the hall and walked to the elevator. The lights were down and pressing the buttons gave no reaction. Someone had finally cut the electricity from the building. Okita sighed and started climbing the stairs slowly. He only hoped he could, and even the mere hope was enough to make him climb.
As he passed doors after doors and landings after landings, his mind trailed back to the night he had fought Kamui. He remembered the way Kagura had looked as clearly as if it was yesterday. Sleeping peacefully with no notion of the battle around her. An annoying voice was nagging in the back of his mind. You say you protect, the voice said. You protect like you protected in that warehouse? What kind of protection was that? Hurting her when she was in the most vulnerable state. He was reaching the skies just like Kagura always wanted to.
On the top of the tallest building of Kabukicho he would be closer to the sky. He would be further away from the ground. He would be closer to Mitsuba. Okita opened the door to the roof and stepped into the light again. He glanced around and noted how different the roof looked in the sunlight. In the darkness, he had hardly seen anything.
Now he noticed the gray and worn out color of the roof and the nets that were circling around the edges. Nets to keep people from jumping. Nets that now were full of holes because after the building had been abandoned, no one had repaired them. A successive jumper left a hole.
Okita shuddered at the thought. What would it take to be desperate enough to jump down from here? Okita shook his head, walked to the antenna in the middle of the roof, and looked up. Okita took a sharp breath, baffled by the sudden beauty of the sight before his eyes. Few meters above him, lit up by the orange glow of the evening sun, Kagura was sitting on a branch of the antenna. She let her feet swing slowly back and forth, slightly wiggling her bare toes, enjoying the air flowing around them.
Okita could only see her profile but he knew she was smiling. Her long hair — had it always been that long? Had she always been that beautiful? That monstrous girl, foulmouthed and crazy, unbelievably annoying at most times, rude and arrogant, loud and violent. Was it really the same girl, the same Kagura he had known for all these years, who was now sitting up there, too beautiful to look at? How would it feel to kiss her? To really kiss her? He remembered very well her small mouth and the round shape and pale color of her lips, and how her tiny nose made her lips look a lot fuller than they actually were.
It was all burned in his memory, whether he liked it or not. He had kissed her, he had kissed her thrice to be correct, but those kisses Okita cursed himself to the lowest of all levels of hell. He had kissed her thrice.
The first time to get her hopes up for nothing and the second time to crush the last pieces of her trust in him. The third time — kissing her while she was unconscious — was just an appropriate fucking cherry on top of everything.
What a way to go. How easy it would have been to kiss her properly in the past. During all of those times they had trained together, fought together or just spent time together.
To give her a good proper kiss, to really feel her. Okita clenched his teeth. He was just about to speak up when Kagura suddenly said: It was so difficult to say anything. His mind was empty. So they both just sat there, bathing in the last rays of the sun.
But like this, in the evenings, when the sun is getting all weak and red, like this I can let the sun touch me.

Okita fought against the lump in his throat. It was impossible for him to finish. Kagura took a sharp breath and bit her lip.
He quickly glanced at Kagura who was clearly startled. Kagura gathered her thoughts for a moment. Kagura sniffed and bit her lip so hard it would leave a mark.
