Offtoseethewizard rated it it was amazing Feb 26, People become overmedicalized, lose authority over their lives and are forced through law and medicine to turn over responsibility of their lives to experts more capable of treating “diseases” when in my opinion the whole enterprise seems a reentrenchment of “religious” control with “scientific” control, aka eugenics. Illich is incisive as proffessions in his and his colleagues’ critiques of the medical, law, and social service professions.
Tools is the most general statement of Illich’s principles; the other three expand on examples sketched in Today in order to critique what he calls “radical monopolies” in the technologies of education, energy consumption, and medical treatment.
